Crosby P.I. is a first person stealth/detective game. The game’s core gameplay mechanic is that when the player puts on his cloak he can ONLY see sounds, and he also becomes invisible. Our main character is a 1930’s detective who was investigating a murder with other detectives when the entire penthouse was taken hostage by gangsters.
A great deal of focus was spent on the gameplay mechanic rather than creating a finished product. This was our first time using Unity so we spent a great deal of time learning the engine. This was our result after only 10 weeks though so I would say we learned quite a bit. The way the sound view works is that each object that can make a sound creates a virtual pulse when it does. Each part of an object in the game detects if a pulse is near it and adds up its power to itself and emits as a certain color. This color system is a heat map where red means very intense sounds and purple is subtle sounds. Objects in the game create sound pulses in a variety of ways, they can create them from triggers, sounds (coughing), and physical interaction (jumping, bumping, dropping). Enemies in the game react when you create too much noise, and they shoot you on sight if you reveal yourself. The challenge to the game is you must get out of the penthouse without getting killed. This means seeing where you need to go, and walking there with the cloak on without hitting any objects.
